We develop a scientific foundation and practical tools for empowering people to choose and successfully pursue their ideal self and to make valuable contributions to society. Our international, interdisciplinary team combines methods from computational cognitive science, psychology, human-computer interaction, and artificial intelligence. We work towards a scientific understanding of how people can realize their full potential, the underlying cognitive mechanisms, and the obstacles that people face in this pursuit. The resulting theories and models guide the development of practical tools, strategies, and interventions that people can use to improve themselves and master the challenges of effective living. Our basic research on metacognitive learning, goal setting and goal pursuit focuses on questions that are fundamental for understanding how the human mind can be improved and supported to foster optimal living, and our approach to cognitive modeling is grounded in resource-rational analysis and computational cognitive science. Our applied research translates the resulting theories into practical tools and strategies that help people identify what they want to contribute to the world, ii) translate these insights into personal values and actionable goals, iii) turn their goals into intentions through long-term planning and good decision-making, iv) choose their actions in accordance with their goals and values, overcome inner obstacles, and stay focussed on their chosen pursuits, and v) improve themselves.
